Parents want their children to learn English well. It is necessary for them to carry out English enlightenment in early childhood. What can we do about children's English enlightenment?
1. Generally speaking, children who are exposed to two languages before the age of 4 can master these two languages effortlessly.
Cross-cultural studies have shown that babies are born with language learning abilities. Newborn babies are citizens of the world. At that time, their acceptance of all languages is the same. As they grow older, they become audiences restricted by their own culture, just like adults.
2. Before the age of 12, children's listening level is higher than their reading level.
Children before the age of 12 can understand and understand complex and interesting stories, but they do not have the ability to read them by themselves. Therefore, before the age of 12, it is important for parents to read aloud to their children, or to listen to high-quality audio with their children, and to help them grind their English ears diligently. This will help children to make an impression on English pronunciation, sentence structure and so on, and develop a kind of "language sense" which we often say.
3. Language is a tool of communication and encourages children to express themselves bravely.
Many parents worry about their poor English and poor pronunciation. But in my opinion, as long as words and sentences can be pronounced smoothly according to the correct phonetic symbols, the so-called "British" and "American" English pronunciation is not so important. Note: Language is used for communication. It's just a tool to use.
For the superstition of pronunciation, the mainland of China is the most. Hong Kong Taiwanese learn English from an early age. Teachers in their schools teach in English, but none of them are pure in spoken English. But as soon as their students graduate, they can enter international companies and work fluently in English.
4. Before parents accompany their children to read English picture books, they need to make a "preview and lesson preparation" to understand what the picture books mean.
On this point, I agree with Ms. Wang Peiqi's method: when you first contact a picture book, read it in English and then read it in Chinese translation. Use this method at least the first three times when reading an English picture book. When the children are familiar with the story (after reading a book three times, basically the children are also familiar with the story), they can read English directly.
Of course, if you start enlightenment before your child is 4 years old, especially when he is 2 or 3 years old, Wang Peichen's advice is: You can try to read English only without translating. Children will surprise you.
5. Don't read only for reading. The expression of parents'image makes children more likely to feel the pleasure of English reading.
When reading to children, parents should be able to read some words, phrases or sentences through their own body movements and expressions, and the meaning of those words can be "acted out". For example, when you read "run", pretend to run; when you read "smile", laugh at your child. This kind of image expression will make children easier to understand the content of picture books, and also experience the pleasure of reading in English, thus generating interest.
